Permissions

Allen & Unwin was set up in Australia in 1976 and was originally part of the UK company George Allen & Unwin, which merged with Bell & Hyman in 1986 and was renamed Unwin Hyman in the UK. In 1990 Unwin Hyman (with the exception of the Australian list) was sold to HarperCollins. This means that any titles that were not originated by Allen & Unwin, in Australia, are not ours. You need to contact HarperCollins in the UK (info@harpercollins.co.uk) but please bear in mind that HarperCollins onsold the academic titles to Routledge at some stage and further, Routledge has now been bought by Taylor & Francis. So if the title you are seeking to clear permissions from appears to be an academic title you would be best off to contact Taylor & Francis (info@tandf.co.uk).

A quick checklist:

  • If the title was published before 1976 it is not ours – either HarperCollins or Taylor & Francis
  • If the title was published after 1976 and before 1990 it could be either ours or HarperCollins or Taylor & Francis – use the guidelines above to try to work out which of us you should approach
  • If the title was published by Allen & Unwin after 1990 it is our title.

Good luck!
