Think you have what it takes to be a published writer? Or perhaps you’ve finished that fantastic manuscript but want some professional feedback?
Allen & Unwin are offering you the chance to have your finished manuscript assessed by an expert!
What you will win:
The winner will receive a manuscript assessment* and report worth
$500, covering the areas of plot and structure; characterisation;
writing and language; market potential; and other areas depending on the
type of manuscript.
The manuscript assessment will be done by Selena
Hanet-Hutchins. Selena was previously submissions editor at Allen & Unwin, and now works freelance with trade
publishers, literary agents and authors. Recent freelance editing, proofreading and assessing includes
best-selling fiction, children’s and young adult fiction,
and memoir, with publishers Allen & Unwin, HarperCollins, ABC Books
and Penguin. Selena is also a published/produced writer and a freelance
sub-agent and has been director and co-director of numerous book and
word events.
The winner will also receive a set of writing books from Allen & Unwin including: Your Writing Coach by Jurgen Wolff, Marketing Your Book by Alison Baverstock, Is There a Book in You? by Alison Baverstock and The Writing Experiment by Hazel Smith.

How to enter:
Entry is only open to Allen & Unwin newsletter subscribers, or you can sign up now.
To enter, send an email to writingcentre@allenandunwin.com with 'Win a manuscript assessment competition' in the subject and tell us in 100 words or less why your manuscript stands out from the rest. Please DO NOT send in your manuscript.
Send in your entries by Friday 11th July 2008. Include your full name, address, phone number and email address in your entry.
Terms and Conditions
1. Information on how to enter & prizes form part of these terms & conditions. Any entry not complying with these terms and conditions is invalid.
2. The promotion commences on 18 June 2008 and ends at 5pm on Friday 11 July 2008.
3. Entry is open to both Australia and NZ residents only. Only one entry per person.
4. Entries are to be submitted via email to writingcentre@allenandunwin.com. DO NOT send in your manuscript.
5. The prize will be awarded to the entry judged to give the most creative answer to the question ‘Tell us in 100 words or less why your manuscript stands out from the rest’.
6. Chance plays no part in determining the winner.
7. The judges’ decision in relation to any aspect of the promotion is final and binding on every person who enters. No correspondence will be entered into.
8. The prize includes a manuscript assessment worth $500 and four writing books:
Your Writing Coach by Jurgen Wolff,
Marketing Your Book by Alison Baverstock,
Is There a Book in You? by Alison Baverstock and
The Writing Experiment by Hazel Smith). The total prize value is $622.
The following conditions apply to the manuscript assessment:
(a) The prize is valid until the 30th September 2008 (you must send in your manuscript by this date).
(b) Word length limit of 150,000 words (or only the first 150,000 will be assessed if your manuscript is longer than the word limit).
(c) The manuscript can be fiction or non-fiction, but it has to be prose – not poetry, song lyrics etc. Graphic novels can also be assessed but there is a page limit of 100 A4 pages.
(d) Manuscript must be presented printed on one side of A4 in double-spaced type.
(e) Manuscript must be the original, unpublished work of the competition winner.
9. Employees and immediate family members of Allen & Unwin are not eligible to enter.
10. Allen & Unwin accept no responsibility for entries not received due to any technological problems.
11. The promoter is Allen & Unwin Pty Ltd, PO Box 8500, St Leonards NSW 1590 Australia. The promotion will be judged by the promoter.
12. The winner will be notified by Friday 1st August 2008.
13. The prize is not transferable and cannot be taken as cash.
