with Rosalind Price

and guests Elizabeth Honey, Lili Wilkinson and Erica Wagner

Maximum of 15 students

This one-day course offers new writers for children an understanding of what goes on inside a publishing house, how publishers make their choices, how to give themselves the best chance of publication and what to expect from the publishing process. It also provides an opportunity to discuss the author-publisher relationship with an experienced author and illustrator.

The program will include general sessions and individual feedback, and will address the much-asked questions:

• What are publishers looking for?
• Which publishers should I submit to?
• What should I submit?
• How can I polish the start of my manuscript?
• What makes a persuasive covering letter?
• What makes a great book title?
• Do I need an agent?
• What should I know about genres, age group and the current market?
• What happens once my book is accepted?
• What should I look out for in a publishing contract?
• How can I make the most of the publishing relationship?

The course includes:

• A full day's tuition from Rosalind Price from 10am to 5pm
• A session with guest tutor
• Lunch and regular tea and coffee breaks

Note: Participants are required to email the first two pages of their manuscript (as a double-spaced Word document) three weeks ahead of the course. On the day, bring a hard copy of these pages, plus a brief synopsis and a draft letter to a publisher.
