Embarrassing school moments

'In primary school I was chosen to portray the bridesmaid in a re-enactment of Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ wedding. Unfortunately my over-active imagination didn’t convey this well to my costume-making mother and I ended up walking the aisle dressed not as a princess, but a fairy princess. Wings and everything.'

'In high school there was the time my crew and I scratched our initials in the back step’s freshly laid concrete, only to realize the flaw in our plan when they provided a roll call of culprits to be sent to the principal’s office… Looking back it seems we didn’t avoid so much as invited with definite delight embarrassing moments – we pulled stupid faces in our school photos, wore ridiculous outfits to mufti-days and made up musicals about teachers we didn’t like. Good times.'

Life at school

Favourite subjects: '3-unit English which was like a invite-only über-nerd book club – awesome. I also liked drama (cuz I’m a show-off) and food tech (cuz we cooked delicious food every week in the name of education).'

Are the characters in She's with the Band based on real people you know?

'Some of them! After university in Sydney, I edited a weekly music street press magazine called The Brag. Despite being wildly untalented musically, two of my best friends and I decided if half of Sincity could do it, so could we: we would start a band. Nepotism landed all of our gigs (I had most local bands' numbers in my mobile) and for about six minutes there was major, major buzz about us. 'Fire Fire' are way more professional than the 'Dead Dead Girls' were however – most rehearsals just tended to diverge into gossiping about our crushes and raiding the fridge. But our costumes were sweet.'

What did you like reading as a teenager?

'Susan Cooper’s ‘The Dark Is Rising’ series, Woody Allen biographies and screenplays; 'Sweet Valley High'; ‘A Clockwork Orange’ (Anthony Burgess); ‘Jane Eyre’ (Charlotte Brontë).'

What's the best piece of advice anyone ever gave you?

'My BFF Sarah told me that because I have pale skin, I should never wear colours like cream or light yellow – in fact, I look best in bright colours like reds and blues. Seriously. Best advice ever.'
